Article and photos by Jim Bacon

The Hi-Lift® jack is essential for any rig that has put on a significant lift.  You can pick up one at your local 4 Wheel Parts shop or online.  They do have varying heights of jacks, so I picked the 48" because of my size lift which is 4".  Now that you have the jack, where do you put it.  Well, there are a couple of areas to choose from with the 4XRAC; front bumper or rear bumper.  I chose the rear bumper.

Installation

Installing the 4XRAC is very straight forward, but I suggest just doing a quick scan and get after it.

1. The instruction say install the jack onto the 4XRAC.

2. After the 4XRAC is on your jack, place against your bumper to see where you will want to have it mounted.

3. The instruction suggest removing your rear bumper, but since I have a receiver hitch installed, this would entail removing more pieces then I wanted, so I went ahead and installed the 4XRAC with the bumper still on the jeep. Having an extra set of hands is good to have at this time since the bumper is not going to be taken off, but since I was solo, just using my knee as a prop, did the job, but as you will see, these Hi-Lift jacks are stout.

4. Once you have found the location to mount your bumper, grab your grease pencil and mark through the holes on the 4XRAC to the bumper of the four areas to be drilled.

5. After marking all locations to be drilled, grab your hammer and punch.  Punch each mark to help making the drilling portion allot easier.  Grab your drill and drill bit (can't remember the size bit) and drill each mark.

6. Once you have all 8 holes drilled, grab your duct tape and lock nuts supplied with the kit.  In figure 1, you can see how I used the duct tape to hold the nut, because you have to try and reach behind the bumper while installed the bolt.  Once you get it started, use your socket and wrench to secure each bolt.

7. Now that all your bolts and 4XRAC is secured, reinstall your Hi-Lift jack to the 4XRAC and your done.

8. EXTRA: Since you just bought about $80+ dollars worth of equipment, you want to make sure it is there when you need it.  The carriage bolt is already predrilled so that you can add locks to secure it to your rig.  But hey, if someone really want to steal your jack, they will; this deters the average walk by thief.  I bought these 2 locks while grocery shopping, gotta love those little hardware sections in the store.  They were only $2.60 each, so well worth it, since the jack cost's around $50+ dollars.
