Tech >   Skyjacker 2" Budget Boost - WJ

Article and photos by Jim Bacon

There are several routes to take to lift your WJ and many of those routes are based on the type of trail riding you plan on doing as well as daily driving capability.  Our project "D4" will be going through a few transformations, and starting it off will be the Skyjacker 2" BB Kit.
What You Will Need
• Skyjacker Value Kit, Part# WJ20 (2FR/2RR spacers included)
• Socket Set
•  or Air Compressor with impact gun / air ratchet
• Floor jacks
• Jack Stands
• Wheels Chocks
• Spring Compressors

CAUTION:  You will be lifting your vehicle and placing on jack stands.  Be sure your vehicle is parked on level ground before starting project.  Secondly, you will be removing vehicle springs; if you use spring compressors, there is potential danger in do so, handle the compressed springs carefully, if they decompress prematurely they can cause serious bodily harm.

Installation

1.  First thing is to read the instructions completely for both front and rear before you start.  You will be starting with the front of the vehicle, so, have your vehicle parked on level ground and chock the rear wheels.

2.  Raise the vehicle in the center of the front axle with a floor jack.  Once raised place your jack stands under the frame behind the control arms so that the front tire/wheels are off the ground freely.

3.  Remove your front wheels.

4.  Remove the lower shock nuts that secure the shock to the axle on both sides.

5.  You may be lucky enough that you can remove the springs with no help from the compressors, if so congrats, if not like me, grab your springs compressors.  You will attach the spring compressors on each side of the spring and then start to compress them.  Be sure to compress them evenly.

6.  Once compressed, they should be easy to remove.  Sometimes you may have to put a bit of pressure on the hub and push the axle downwards for the spring to come out.  DO this to both sides.

7.  Once the spring is out, you will start on the left side of vehicle.  Remove the spring isolator and install it on bottom of the spacer.  The spacer will not just stay in place, so grab your spring and start to put it back into location then you can use the spring to hold the spacer in place.  Once it is in place, you can decompress the spring if you used a compressor and you are ready to move to the passenger side and repeat this step.
NOTE:  be sure to note the position of the spring as it seats into the lower spring isolator on the axle so that it is at it's stop.  It must be seated into the coil spring isolator.

8. When finished, raise the front axle and reconnect the lower shock nuts that secure the shock to the axle. Install the front wheels, lower it back onto the ground.  Torque all bolts to factory specifications and re-torque after 500 miles.  It is also recommended to have a front end alignment after installation.

Okay time to start on the rear of vehicle.

9.  Raise up the rear end with a floor jack.  Place the jack stands under the frame, but also allow the rear suspension to move up and down freely with a floor jack.

10.  Remove the tires/wheels.

11.  Disconnect the sway bar from the end links.

12.  Disconnect the lower shock mount bolts.  Lower the axle with the floor jack so that the rear axle droops and the coil springs become loose.

13.  Remove the coil spring and the spring isolator located on the bottom.  The removal the bottom coil spring isolator is not as easy at the front.  You will need a large flat head screwdriver or something to pry it off, but be careful to not cut or ruin it.

14.  Starting with the left side of the vehicle install the new spacer and the part numbers facing up then place the isolator on top.  Install the coil spring.  Now move time to put on the passenger side coil spring.  Using the  floor jack and lifting the left side of the axle will help get the coil spring into place on the passenger side.  Just pay attention to the vehicle on the jack stands and doing this can raise the vehicle off the jack stands.

15.  Raise up the rear suspension with the floor jack and reconnect the lower shock mount bolts and reconnect the sway bar end links.

16.  Reinstall the tires/wheels.

17.  Raise up the rear of the vehicle, remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle.  Torque all bolts/nuts to factory specifications and re-torque after 500 miles.
